About

Sharks and rays are a group of aquatic animals that is increasingly threatened, but we still know little about most species’ behaviour and ecology which hinders the devise and implementation of effective conservation measures. At the same time, sharks and rays are increasingly exploited by the shark diving industry.

This personal website of Juerg M. Brunnschweiler provides information about his shark research activities. Juerg holds a PhD in Biology from the University of Zurich and has been studying sharks, as an independent researcher, for more than 20 years. He is interested in the behaviour of free-ranging sharks, marine tourism, marine protected area design, and how small-scale conservation projects can be successfully implemented in developing countries. At the Shark Reef Marine Reserve on the southern coast of Viti Levu, Fiji, using a range of methods from direct observation to electronic tagging, Juerg has been studying the life cycle of the bull shark, his focus species, and how shark feeding tourism affects their behaviour.
